In a much-needed attempt towards a more inclusive and homogeneous system of education, 28 schools (26 government schools and 2 private) have been certified as "trans-friendly" or transgender-inclusive right here in the capital and we're swelling with pride.
After 8 months of continuous workshops by transgender representatives, this change is being executed as a part of the Purple Board project which aims at making education accessible to the transgender community as well.
It is an initiative by Society for People's Awareness, Care and Empowerment (SPACE), an NGO, which recently teamed up with with the Delhi Government's Directorate of Education. SPACE is dedicated to weed out transphobia and it also aspires to tackle discrimination or bullying on the basis of a child's sexual identity.
The project has also been supported by the Netherlands Embassy and an "anonymous question box" actually helped people to know more about the functioning of this community!
This move was celebrated in an interactive ceremony where the school heads were felicitated with awards which were modelled on the trans-community flag, with blue, pink and white horizontal stripes!
