Knocksense: A local content and recommendations platform

If you’re a Delhiite, you know that traffic jams can strike at any moment and ruin a plan to chill with your friends or delay you if you’re going to the airport or railway station.

Now, in a new move, the Delhi government aims to tackle these issues and make commutes for Delhiites more convenient and seamless. They will make a new tunnel bypass that will decongest many areas and cut down travel times by up to three hours.

Traffic in Delhi has been an issue haunting many citizens and it’s high time that this tunnel was constructed. Areas such as Mathura Road, Ring Road and Bhairon Mark see heavy traffic congestions, which causes inconvenience to commuters.

Which areas will it ease traffic in?

Areas such as ITO, Ring Road and Mathura Road will benefit from this upcoming development. ITO is one of the biggest hubs and traffic here is always an issue. Over 3 lakh vehicles travel on this route daily and often times, a snag in one vehicle results in long, tedious jams. Commuters from Noida currently have use this route but when the tunnel is complete, they can bypass it entirely.

Another area, Ring Road, will also benefit from the underground tunnel. One of the lifeline of the city, it was built to ease out traffic, but over the years, it has become one of the bottle necks for such jams. With the underground tunnel, the government hopes that traffic is bypassed.

Apart from these areas, Bhairon Marg, an intersection on the Ring Road, is a roadblock for vehicles coming from NH-24.

Details of the project

The total estimated cost of the project is said to be a little over ₹700 crores. It will consist of a 1.2 kilometer long tunnel, and six underpasses to make travelling to Central Delhi a breeze.

Though the underground tunnel will help bypass these routes and clear out traffic jams almost all across the city, it will also help in decreasing air pollution. Due to traffic jams and idle vehicles, the emissions are increased and it leads to substantial dips in AQI.
