Chandni Chowk is one of the most vibrant places in all of Delhi, both culturally and historically. With a new story around every corner, it is certainly a must visit for those looking to experience Delhi, from the ground up. Though it is such a frequented place by people from all walks of life, it has its own share of issues and problems that often tend to dissuade people from visiting it. With this in mind, there are plans to completely overhaul the market space, all before Independence Day.

What’s the update?

As per recent reports, the last that we’d heard about Chandni Chowk, it was all set to become one of the first pedestrian only markets in the country. This was due to the sole issue that motorists would often bring their vehicles in the lanes of the market, causing nothing short of a ruckus.

Earlier, the plan was to only make it a pedestrian only market but now, it has been extended to give a complete overhaul to Chandni Chowk as a whole.

What comes as part of the overhaul?

Most of the other changes coming to Chandni Chowk will be largely aesthetic, so as to draw a larger footfall. As part of the aesthetic overhaul, the PWD is looking to revamp the entire area along a 300-meter stretch of route.

Along the route, the plan is to install new and modern street furniture- including new street lamps, more CCTV cameras, public toilets, benches around the place and more greenery across the entire stretch that will be made pedestrian only. One of the best changes coming to the market is that it will be adorned with classic Mughal Motifs and tiles that will give it a charm like never before.

To make matters convenient for the shop owners there are also new loading and unloading bays which will ensure that thier goods’ vehicles do not cause a choke point in the road.

Of course, one of the best upcoming changes is the fact that vehicles will no longer be allowed in several lanes of the market is a great decision by the authorities. As part of this, some routes will allow vehicles, but only during early morning hours or late at night. Apart from that, the PWD has taken a look at the way that traffic is managed in Tokyo and wish to implement it here in a similar manner.

At any rate, the upcoming changes are certainly what we’ve been looking forward to and now that we have a deadline for it, we can see how fast the authorities deliver on their promises.
