The movie is based on the lives of freedom fighters Alluri Sitaramaraju and Komaram Bheem. SS Rajamouli was quoted as saying that RRR will be an ode to the lives of these freedom fighters.

A tweet sent out by the official handle of RRR confirmed that Alia would be playing the female lead of the movie while Ajay Devgan is expected to play a crucial role during a flashback episode. Ram Charan will be playing the role of Alluri Sitaramaraju and Jr NTR will portray Komaram Bheem.

Rajamouli also said that there are gaps in the lives of these legendary men and the movie explores the possibility of these two lead characters meeting in Delhi before joining the revolution. SS wants to show what could have and would have happened, had Alluri Sitaramaraju and Komaram Bheem crossed paths.
