The 4-lane signal free flyover from Dhaula Kuan to IGI Airport will now cut your travel time by 30 minutes and save you from the never ending traffic woes. The express corridor between Dhaula Kuan and Indra Gandhi International Airport was inaugurated on March 2nd.

What’s the update?

National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is opening a four lane-signal less flyover between Dhaula Kuan-IGI Airport. The three kilometer stretch from Dhaula Kuan to IGI, along NH8, usually takes over 30 minutes to cross during peak hours. The corridor will save you these extra minutes by providing an alternate express route.

The Facts

The Dhaula Kuan corridor was made in a record time of 136 days and costed around ₹260 crores. After the flyover, NHAI aims to widen the Dhaula Kuan-IGI signal free corridor from six-lane to subsequently an eight-lane corridor, two vehicular underpasses, three passenger underpasses and a footover for pedestrians.

Dhaula Kuan is infamous for the bottleneck jams and long waits on the red lights

Why is it important?

Dhuala Kuan is known for long jams and long wait along the red lights. Because of the onslaught of regular as well as airport traffic the wait time becomes extremely lengthy and is often the reason for passengers missing their flights. The signal free corridor will play a major role in segregating traffic as well as reducing the wait time. It will not only help people in reaching the airport faster but will also regulate the normal flow of traffic and reduce long jams.

Knock Knock

The express lane is not only beneficial for people travelling to the airport, but will also help in managing the general traffic in the area. It will save travel time of flyers as well as daily commuters. This corridor and subsequent other plans of NHAI will ensure that passengers don’t miss their flights due to traffic woes.

Parallelly, the state has authorised the local civic body to decide the level of curbs in 3 of these 14 districts, namely Mumbai, Mumbai suburban and Thane. As such, the BMC has permitted all shops (except malls) to open here till 10 PM. The local trains will, however, remain shut for all passengers.
