On wednesday, Delhiites got a breath of fresh air as the AQI in the city and surrounding areas dipped to its lowest in 2019. The AQI in Delhi, Gurugram and Noida was seen to be around the 204 mark, which comes in the ‘poor’ quality of air, category.

According to experts at the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), the AQI may increase by an insignificant margin, but would remain in the ‘poor’ category. Earlier this month, the AQI was dwindling around in the ‘very poor’ and ‘severe’ category, which are extremely detrimental to one's health and could cause breathing related issues if necessary precautions aren’t taken.

The prime reasons for the drop in pollution levels could be the high level of wind speed that helped in dispersing the pollutants here and there. The wind blew in a south-westerly direction, taking along with it the pollution. The low temperatures have not yet helped and the winds are enough to tackle it.

Additionally, the pollution has also led to an increase in the levels of smog in the city, which has affected some trains and flights into and from the city.

The main pollutants in the city are seen to be two types of toxic particles. PM2.5 and PM10. Both of these have different effects on the atmosphere and on people’s health. The PM2.5 pollutant was seen to be at the 92 mark.PM10 on the other hand, was recorded at a much higher value of 166.

You can check the AQI of your region here.
