DELHI: Recently, Delhi government made headlines with the announcement that it is proposing to introduce a subsidy which will make Delhi metro and DTC bus rides free for women. Following that, the Delhi Government on Friday said its MLAs, councillors and women volunteers will hold 1,000 public meetings in the next seven days to gather public opinion on the proposed free metro and bus rides for women.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia informed the media that a meeting of all the office-bearers of the party was organized at the residence of AAP chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

"It was decided that in the next one week, the MLAs, councillors and women volunteers will hold small public meetings in their areas to get the opinion of the public," Sisodia said.

A total of 1,000 such public meeting will be held, the minister said. "The party will ask two questions from the public: One, should the scheme be implemented and free rides be offered to women? Second, what is the basis of opposition of the scheme?"

After the announcement, there was a social media uproar by several women who considered the proposal to be sexist and not worth implementing. On the other hand, a huge strata of female population believes the move will help them opt for safer modes of transportation and save a huge chunk of their time and money. The debate is an ongoing one.

The Delhi government has proposed a scheme to give subsidy to women commuters in Delhi to make their rides in DTC and cluster buses and Delhi Metro free of cost. The finance minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia also assured the people that the Delhi government has ample money to fund the scheme and not disrupt the economy.

Developed countries such as The Netherlands, Russia, Germany, Brazil and several others have their own form of free public transportation or free public transit systems, each having their own community, economical and social benefit.

Yet, implementing something like this for women all over the city as varied as Delhi will become a Herculean task, especially fo the metro system which already has its own system already in place. According to a report presented by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), a whole new pink token system will have to be put in place which will allow free entry to women all over the city and the metro corporation said that they would take around eight months to implement the new system.
