Delhi Metro is undoubtedly the biggest public transport service in the city. Metro has spread its wings far and wide, providing a simpler and easier way of transportation for the people of Delhi. In a new bid to expand and make life much more comfortable for the city's residents, Delhi metro may soon get a light version.

According to new updates, Delhi could soon get its first metrolite route, an urban rail transit system similar to the metro but a smaller and more economic one.

What's the update?

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has recently approved a stretch of 20 kilometre rail line from Kirti nagar to Dwarka Sector 25. This will be Delhi's first ever metrolite.

The new metro route has been sent to the government for approval and is expected to act as a feeder for the existing (main) metro network.

What to expect?

The metrolite will be a smaller, more compact and cheaper version of the metro, though it will also be a bit slower than the metro itself.

Rather than a full length train with six to eight coaches, the metrolite will only have three coaches and the capacity to carry 300 passengers. The trains will also have a maximum speed of 60 km/h.

According to the ministry guidelines released earlier in the year, metrolite trains will be constructed on the ground level; to keep the expenses low, they will not be elevated. It has also come to light that the metro will run on dedicated tracks, which may or may not be fenced.

The metrolite, if approved, will originate from the Kirti Nagar interchange station and will connect to the Blue and Green lines.

Knock Knock

The metrolite will prove to be a big help for commuters who have had to depend on unreliable traditional transport systems. It will not only act as a feeder service for metro passengers but will also make travelling for short distances much more comfortable and reasonable.
