Every other month, we hear people committing suicide at the metro stations by jumping to their death and honestly, it creates a maddening chaos and trauma around. Imagine the crowd around witnessing the incident or panicking passengers stuck inside a compartment, pertaining to the suicide! It is all an ugly scenario with a life lost, hundreds traumatized and of course, the disruptions of metro services.

In an attempt to abate the rising numbers of suicides, the DMRC authorities have initiated a social media campaign for commuters, titled ‘Never Give Up’.

This campaign is being channeled to encourage suicidal commuters to seek help from Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials or to contact the security agencies if they are in distress.

DMRC’s staff will be sensitized to identify such people and to guide them to safety. The authorities are also actively urging people to keep a watch on fellow commuters “who look visibly upset and in need of help”. These commuters are then taken to a counselling session by the present metro officials, to discourage them from taking any further step which would be harmful or threatening.

Although in the last 2 years, Delhi Metro has taken several steps to curtail suicides within the premises of the stations, the numbers have been unfortunately increasing with every passing month.

According to Hindustan Times, “Between 2014 and 2018, 83 people committed suicide across 58 Delhi Metro stations. The maximum number of suicides , at least 32 , were on the Blue Line, which connects Dwarka Sector-21 with Vaishali and Noida Electronic City in Uttar Pradesh.”

More of platform screen doors will be installed across all stations in the coming times and it will undoubtedly be an appalling move! These screen-doors are a continuous barrier that prevents passengers from moving closer to the edge of the platform and it only parts when the train arrives. Further, the authorities are also planning to initiate a 24X7 helpline for the help for people in distress and we hope that this move, makes a difference.
