Delhi to get 7 world class bus terminals soon!

In the attempts to improve the travelling experience for commuters Delhi Government, on Monday gave a go ahead for the modernization of seven bus terminals in the city.

Nehru Place Terminal will be the first of the seven to get an upgrade.

This comes as an attempt to give the much ignored Delhi bus terminals and bus facilities a well deserved face-lift. "Delhi bus terminals have been neglected for decades and the convenience and comfort of bus commuters often ignored," Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot said in a statement.

The tender for the overhaul of Nehru Place Bus Terminal has been floated by the transport department, and tender for other two bus terminals, Najafgarh and Azadpur are expected to be up within a week. While the tenders for other four terminals is expected to be out by February.

“The terminals, right now, do not incorporate basic public amenities like waiting area, drinking water, toilet facilities and pick-up/drop-off points. Several spaces are often poorly lit and shelters are few and far between which deter women, young and aged passengers and differently-abled commuters from using the terminals," he said.

He also said that the bus commuters should be provided with the same experience that the metro commuters get at transit points. The government’s hope is to change the broken down often shady looking terminals into world class facilities where commuters can have the luxury to enjoy civic services.

The modern and futuristic Nehru Place bus terminal will include a public plaza along the Ring Road where commuters can wait and access facilities like Mohalla Clinic, play area and e-Kiosk for bill payment. It will also have an aerodynamic, nature inspired, tree-like canopy which will serve as a rain-shelter and water-collector directing rainwater into harvesting tanks. All of these will turn the basic transport hub into a civic centre.
