This dessert traces its origins back to the Mughal times, when people figured out that they could use saltpetre to keep Himalayan ice intact, even in a tropical country like ours. This indulgent dessert has taken many avatars since and today, we have no dearth of kulfi variants- serve it in an earthen matka or simply on a stick.
Dilliwale are all about good desserts and there's no dearth of kulfi stalls in here. But there’s this one particular spot which is over a 100 years old and its lineage of kulfis makes us want travel to puraani Dilli even in this punishing heat!
sell kulfis which are intensely creamy renditions of fresh fruits and no commercial brand can actually match up to the flavours here! 100 years of expertise, served on a summer day to quench your sugary cravings- an absolute delight after a hearty meal!
Lores suggest that in the early 1900s, Mr. Kuremal came out with an idea of selling kulfis to the residents of Chawri Bazaar and he had two varieties of kulfi then- plain doodh and kesar pista! Mohan Lal, the son, took on the business and tried to expand the range of kulfis and introduced the iconic stuffed kulfi!
It is made of an actual fruit! The fruity pulp is used in the making of the kulfi and the content is then added back into the fruit and set. The choices are limited to apple, pineapple, pomegranate, orange and mango- the server cuts open the fruit and plates up slices of the velvety stuffed kulfi.
This place also serves milk-free kulfis which are known as 'Kulfi Julpeps' and are perfect for people who’re sadly lactose intolerant! It is an iced treat packed with the wholesomeness of a fruit, served with a generous sprinkling of chaat masala on top which makes it khatta-meetha and it’s a must-try on a humid day. They have a wide range of kulfi juleps such as kala khatta, jamun, aam panna, imli, guava, kiwi, litchi and chickoo among others!
If you prefer your kulfis like classics, then you can grab a rabri kulfi here but we’re sure that one wouldn’t be enough for your appetite! Rabri kulfis are available in interesting flavours- fruit cream, paan, gulab, gulkand, khajjur and figs to name a few.
