Over the past few months, we've been hearing a lot about Delhi's AQI and how it has dipped down to an almost abysmal state. The situation was rather bad about a month ago and even now, the National capital and surrounding areas gasp for a breath of fresh air.

In the most recent Air Quality survey, it turns out that the AQI of Delhi had once again reached the 'Severe' category, three weeks after a stretch of relatively normal AQI. Additionally, it was also noted that Noida came in as the most polluted city in India.

What's the update?

On December 8, 2019, Noida was seen to be the most polluted city in the country. This is a result of low wind speeds, dense clouds and a low temperature.

Prior to this, Delhi's AQI was at an acceptable level, 'very poor', mainly due to the short spell of rain and wind that the city witnessed. Now that the winters have set in and the mercury has dropped, pollution levels are on the rise.

On Sunday, the AQI of Noida was recorded at 414, which is quite harmful for the general populous. The main pollutants that give out this figure, 414, are PM particulates PM2.5 and PM10. They float about in the atmosphere and spread toxicity in any given city. What is alarming is the rate at which the AQI spiked up. A day before that, on Saturday, the figure was at 388, which is a stark drop from 414.

Apart from Noida, it turned out that Ghaziabad was the second most polluted city in India on Sunday. Here too, the AQI rose unpredictably on Sunday, to 413 from 394.

Winters are here in Noida

One of the major reasons for the dip in AQI was seen to be the fall in temperature. The low temperature also resulted in a lack of winds, along with mercury readings lower than average. Met department officials also went on to say that for a couple of weeks, one can only expect a continual rise in the cold. It seems like the winters are officially here, folks!
