Although Delhi is counted among one of the majorly polluted cities in India, the city has been actively taking steps to reduce carbon footprints and pollution in general.

Keeping the city’s ultimate goal of mitigating contamination and to propel the citizens towards a fit lifestyle, Delhi is introducing the biggest public bicycle sharing system which is all set to take off from southwest Delhi’s Dwarka.

What’s happening?

News has been doing the rounds stating that the Delhi authorities will provide a space for developing more than 300 parking stands for bicycles. Around 5,500 cycles will be procured as a part of the new transport sharing system and to make the travel smooth, 100 kms of tracks will also be laid down! Roads with ramps will also be chosen for the same to create a hurdle-free movement of cyclists without any speed breakers.

How to access the service?

There’ll apparently be a mobile application which would allow users, specifically cyclists to register themselves. With this registration, each user will receive an OTP that can be used for unlocking cycles at various docking stations. The DDA is yet to finalise the cost of using these public cycles! However the authorities have assured Delhizens that the charges will be nominal so that this transportation facility becomes accessible to all.

Over 5,000 people have already registered for this New Delhi Municipal Council's (NDMC) smart cycle sharing project in the one-month trial and it is being planned that the cycling tracks will be developed, starting on pilot basis at Barakhamba Road. To promote the concept and to spread awareness, a cycling carnival will also be held every month from next year.

This initiative is a much-needed relief in the present revving levels of pollution scenario of the city and in our opinion, other cities should follow suit ASAP towards a greener India.
