After 16 years of service, The Delhi Metro has been ranked the seventh busiest metro rail network in the world. According to the latest report from the Union Internationale des Transports Publics (UITP), a total of 178.9 million people traveled via Delhi Metro in 2017 which helped it secure a rank among the top ten busiest metro rail networks in the world.
According to the data provided from UITP’s report, seven out of the top ten busiest metro rail networks are located in Asia. Tokyo Metro has topped the list with 346.3 million passengers. Whereas, Moscow Metro has been ranked second and Shanghai Metro third with 236.9 million and 204.4 million passengers, respectively.
Earlier, in UITP’s 2015 report, Delhi Metro couldn’t make it to the list of top 10. However, The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s website ranked it 10th in the world based on the statistics of March 2017.
The Delhi Metro has made its name to the top 10 list by surpassing Paris Metro. Guangzhou Metro, Mexico City Metro and Hong Kong Metro are some of the others in the top 10.
The Delhi Metro construction began in 1998 and was open for public in 2002. On the basis of the length of the metro rail network, The Delhi Metro had been ranked 15th. With the introduction of some new services this year, it has ascended further in the list.
