Delhi Metro is going green with cycle stands at major metro stations

DMRC is pushing for a greener mode of transportation by introducing cycle stands at several metro stations

The public transportation system in Delhi has forever been a topic of pride for the city; the metro being the crown jewel. Delhi Metro rail Corporation has come up with several changes and addition to its giant web of network and the commuters can only be thankful. It has also been pushing for a cleaner and greener means of transport. In another of its efforts DMRC has decided to introduce cycle stands at several of its metro stations.

What’s the update?

Delhi metro has introduced designated stands for cycles in the metro stations. This push has been made to ensure that people who travel by bicycle find a safe place to park their vehicles while commuting via the metro. It is also done to initiate and make people comfortable with a more environment friendly mode of transportation.

DMRC is also promoting cycle sharing at many of the newly built metro stations.

The Facts

The cycle parking is already available at 18 parking lots across different metro stations in the city. The stations that have already been provided with the cycle stands are, Dwarka Sector 21, Dwarka, Dwarka mor, Saket, Welcome Rithala, Chattarpur, Mukunda, Nagloi, Peergarh, Seelampur, Shahdara, Arjangarh, Okhla Bird Sanctuary, Sarita Vihar, Badarpur and Tughlaqabad.

TOI quoted a DMRC spokesperson as saying that the parking lots at Newada, Uttam Nagar (East) and Vishwavidyalaya metro stations have been identified and will soon be provided with a permanent cycle stands.

The cycle stand will have locks for each cycle.

Why the need?

The cycle stands will, for one, ensure the safekeeping of the cycles that are parked at the metro stations. It will secondly and more importantly provide for an alternate mode of transportation. These stands will prove to be extremely useful in the future when more and more people will opt for environment friendly transportation, especially for shorter distances.
