On Sunday, Delhi witnessed it’s warmest day in January since 2007 and met department officials had predicted that a spell of heavy rains will follow. Today, i.e. Tuesday, Delhi saw a wave of heavy morning rain, causing temperatures to dip significantly during the morning, further leading to heavy traffic jams across the city.
Though Delhi was the epicentre of the rain fall, adjoining areas such as a few cities in Uttar Pradesh also saw mild levels of rain through the morning. As for the temperature, though it did go down as compared to the past few days, it was about 5-7 degrees above the usual temperature at this time of the year.
The rains also brought along with them heavy traffic jams, dense fog, dark skies and low visibility. Almost all routes in the city were jam packed due to wet roads, slow moving traffic and dense fog. Most jam packed were Lala Lajpat Rai Marg, Defence Colony Flyover and a few other. In fact, the rain was heavy enough to cause a caving in a road in Lodhi Road where a bus is currently trapped.
Apart from hindering intra city movement, the rains and it’s consequences also became responsible for delaying or even cancelling a few flights and over 10 trains. Of the 15 trains, some were bound to Mumbai, some Bengaluru and some to Lucknow. A few flight companies took to Twitter to update passengers on the situation. Vistara Airlines mentioned that travellers should leave well in time as the roads are jammed and a few other announced flight cancellation in the airport as well as on Twitter.
One of the benefits of the rain, however was seen to be the substantial dip in AQI of several parts of the city. In hotspots such as Anand Vihar, ITO, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Mundka, Dwarka Sector-8, Ashok Vihar and Jahangirpuri AQI shifted from ‘poor’ category to ‘moderate’.
According to met department officials, Delhi may see another few days of light drizzles followed by clear, open and sunny skies. Though the rains are loved by all, in the winters, they do tend to have a largely negative impact on the atmosphere.
