Why implement driverless trains?

The main goal that DMRC aims to reach with the unattended trains is to provide faster, safer and a more futuristic mode of transport for it’s travellers. This in turn, will put Delhi metro in line with some of the most developed metro rail systems not only in India, but across the world.

The details of the development

The futuristic driverless trains will run on Pink Line and Magenta Line, which currently use a version of the same technology. The technology, UTO (unmanned train operation) is being used by the two metro lines but need for the drivers has not been completely removed.

When the technology is fully implemented, the drivers not will be needed, but will still be present at the cabin in order to take the wheel in case of an emergency. The attendents will be present in the trains and will also help passengers with any assistance they may require.

In order to actually implement UTO on a full scale basis, the rules of the DMRC would have to be slightly altered. As of now, the rules state that a driver must be present in the train. With the new technology, the rule will have to be changed to make way for the change to be implemented.

Who will it benefit?

The upcoming change to the Delhi metro is one of the latest and most innovative changes we have seen. It will ensure a safer and faster means of commute, thereby making the the metros more convenient for the travellers. At its core, the goal is to help anyone who uses the metro but will especially be beneficial for students and office goers who use the two metro routes.

As of now, no date for the implementation of the technology has been given but it should take place once the audits and trial runs are complete. In the coming future, all trains of the Delhi metro will utilize UTOs, making for a more future friendly intra city rail system.

Delhi metro is one of the most traversed and developed metro systems in the country and soon, it may become even more futuristic. With all the new routes, the developments and expansions, Delhi metro never fails to surprise.
