There is no denying that Delhi wouldn't be the mega developed city that it is today without the intra city metro system. The metro has done a great deal to completely overhaul the way Delhiites travel within the city. However, one thing that often goes unnoticed is how safe Delhi metro is. This is largely due to some of the strict rules that passengers are required to follow. Read on to know some of the rules that you need to adhere to in order to travel by Delhi Metro.

What are the strict rules?

It is for a good reason that rules and regulations on what you can and cannot carry have been implemented. The heavy fines and penalties that one would have to pay are enough to dissuade anyone from carrying banned items in the metro.

Within the metro, spitting, smoking, playing music and littering is not just looked down upon but also a crime. The next time you think about playing music out loud just because you forgot your earphones, think about where it could land you.

Which items are banned?

Often, when hurrying to get on the metro, it can be easy to lose track of what you have in your bag. Things such as lighters, matchboxes and even cigarette packs (to some extent) are a complete no-go. Since these are flammable objects, they could pose as a problem.

Other banned objects in the metro include some obvious things such as liquor, chemicals, weapons, explosives, sharp objects and the likes. When one comes across a 'do not carry list', these objects are always mentioned, so it is no surprise that Delhi metro has done the same.

What you probably didn't know was that passengers can't bring their pets on board in Delhi Metro. Though there are a few pet friendly metros around the globe, Delhi Metro isn't one of them. Apart from that, it is not allowed for people to carry more than 15 kgs of weight. As we haven't really seen weighing machines at metro stations, this rule leaves a kind of loose end.

Apart from that, it is also illegal to carry animal or human carcasses in the Delhi Metro. Like anyone would even try that!

Is there a time limit to the metro travel?

Another rule that you probably didn't know is that one can travel on a single journey ticket for a total of 180 minutes only. Since there aren't any metro routes that take so long, it makes sense that authorities would begin to suspect anyone who stays in the metro for so long.

Additionally, you could also be fined for every extra 10 minutes you spend in the metro, so be sure not to fall asleep on your next ride back from work!

These are just some of the rules that are implemented in order to keep Delhi metro safe and sound. These do not focus on a specific segment of people and rather aim to make Delhi metro safer as a whole. At any rate, the fines are so steep, that only a daredevil millionaire would try to flout these rules.
