Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi is one of the largest airports in the world! Travelling within the airport itself tends to be a tedious task and commuters often get overwhelmed with the amount of gates, floors and what not, which can lead to confusions. The airport authorities aim to tackle this and bring a new intra airport rail system- the Air Train, to IGI airport.

What is the ‘Air Train’?

At its core, the goal of the Air Train is to provide a simple and easy method to commute across the different terminals of the IGI. It will connect the terminals- T1, T3 and T2 (which will be renovated to become T4) and even Aerocity, the hotel complex located near the international airport.

Apart from connecting the terminals, it will also provide seamless connection with Delhi Metro’s airport line. As of now, the airport line commuters only have a convenient transfer to T3, and to get to T1 or T2, they have to make use of feeder buses. With the help of the Air Train, the goal is to eliminate the need for travelling on roads that are usually crowded, owing to the massive annual and daily footfall that the airport sees.

Details of the Air Train

As of now, the Air Train has only been approved by the authorities and work for the same should begin soon. Subsequently, the train will be active in a couple years time. In total, the inter-terminal train will consist of 4 stations, covering a length of 5.1 kilometers underground and overhead.

One of the stations of the Air Train will be at the cargo hold, which will connect seamlessly to the Delhi Metro’s existing route. Though the metro will still go up to T3, users can use the interchange station to get to T2 and T1. The cost of construction for the total project is said to be about 2,500 crores.

The project was first proposed in 2016 and was said to be completed by 2020. However, this date will have to be postponed due to the fact that construction has not even begun yet.

Why the need?

The goal of the air train is to provide a more convenient travel option for passengers visiting the IGI Airport. Additionally, due to the ever increasing footfall of the airport, approach roads are usually blocked and tend to delay many passengers. With the air trains, they hope to clear out some of that traffic and enable a more convenient travel option.

This development is one of the best that we have heard of so far and we cannot wait until the project is finally complete. Not only will it make for easier travels, but also herald an era of a more developing India.
