Following the pedestrianization of several markets across North and Central Delhi, a new shopping area, part of East Delhi, is set to join the bandwagon. More specifically, Krishna Nagar market will be given a complete makeover, making it the first pedestrianized market in East Delhi.

Mainly, this is to make way for pedestrians and to convert the shopping zone into a totally non-motorized vehicle (NVM) area. Read on to know all the details.

What's the update?

Krishna Nagar market place in East Delhi is a hub for all shoppers. For those of you looking for the latest fashion trends, or just shopping for supplies, there is no denying that Krishna Nagar is a one-stop shop for many Delhiites.

Owing to this, people, naturally, tend to bring their personal vehicles right into the market, which creates nothing short of a nuisance in the small and crowded lanes. Often, it can also pose as a safety hazard.

Now, these issues seem to have been recognized, which is exactly why the EDMC has plans to completely revamp two stretches- Lal Quarter and Mandir Marg.

Why the need?

On the surface, it is rather obvious why such a move would be the need of the hour. Most of the shops and shopping complexes along these two stretches do not have a basement or overhead parking zones.

Adding to that is the fact that these lanes are rather narrow and once a vehicle is parked in here, shopping becomes quite a hassle. Often, many visitors tend to turn back as the entire marketplace is just too chaotic.

As for the pedestrianization itself, the EDMC has a few plans. For one, they wish to give the roads a makeover. Plans to install new street furniture, benches and plants all along the market are also afoot.

The biggest change, however, is the plan to construct a new parking lot with a capacity of over 200 vehicles. This will also be the most beneficial change because the roads will finally be free of stray vehicles.
