Prominent South Delhi markets to be decongested, parking facilities to be improved
The South Delhi Municipal Corporation has decided to declutter major markets in South Delhi with designated parking and more
Parking in Delhi is always a hustle, no matter where you are and where you go, finding parking space is nothing less than a miracle in the city. Due to the absence established parking spaces people often have to park along the streets or in narrow lanes which finally leads to congestion, roadblocks and traffic issues. To deal with the same, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation has decided to declutter major markets in South Delhi.
What’s the update?
The seven markets around Aurobindo Marg namely- Hauz Khas market, Green Park MArket, Aurobindo Place Market, Uphaar Cinema Shopping Complex and Yusuf Sarai market are among the proposed uphaul of seven markets in and around South Delhi.
For the proposed decongestion, civic bodies in Delhi are planning to build a multilevel parking, designate roadside parking area and mark tow-away, halt and go spots and cleared walkways.
It was reported by TOI that the plans have been finalized after a meeting held between South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) and lieutenant governor Anil Baijal, this Friday.
Residents and the vendors near the aforementioned marketplaces were also asked for suggestions and inputs regarding the parking and traffic issue.
It has been proposed that the stretch of road from- Safdarjung and AIIMS towards Yusuf Sarai Market, Aurobindo Market towards Outer Ring Road and the Balbir Saxena Road will be no parking zones. While Chaudhary Hukumchand Marg, the Hauz Khas road and the rest of Aurobindo Marg will have designated roadside parking.
Why the need?
With the new decongestion plan the markets will become less cluttered, people will have designated parking spaces hence the streets will be more breathable and pedestrian friendly.
Also, the decongestion will pave a path for a better and more improved shopping experience. Not only will it help the shoppers, but also the shopkeepers themselves as they could see a rise in the footfall owing to the more open roads. With the more open roads, the markets will soon become free of noise as well as air pollution, making it a place for more than just shopping but also for a nice evening walk.
If the move turns out to be successful in its implementation, then the authorities could look to make more markets free of four and two wheelers.
