If you’re of the opinion that Northeast Indian cuisine is all about soups, thukpas and momos- then trust us when we say that you owe yourself a trip to Nimtho!
Tucked away in the quiet lanes of GK-1, Nimtho is a comfortable fit in the north-eastern cuisine space of Delhi! It wouldn’t be wrong to attribute the origin of the concept of “farm to table” to Sikkim and why not really? Sikkim is the first organic state of India, rightfully so!
So without much ado, we visited this sliver of Sikkim in Delhi and let us tell you- it was a fresh whiff of mountain air in the regular hubbub of life!
✓Black Rice Pudding
Service: The manager welcomed us and he gave us suggestions when it came to ordering! He was polite and his in-depth knowledge of Sikkimese food is commendable.
Servings: The three of us were served one portion each of thenthuk and jhol momos after which we asked for only one portion of the remaining items because we were almost already full- the portions have a good value for money.
If you want to try out traditional Sikkimese food, then there is no better option in Delhi than Nimtho.
We were served Thenthuk which is a noodle soup in a warm broth with meat and an assortment of vegetables- a must try! The noodles in the soup were soft and the broth had strong flavours which complemented the tender meat.
The jhol momos which are basically momos in a sour gravy, is a traditional dish and we felt that the gravy on them was a little too sour to our liking. So you can maybe skip this and order a plate of no-nonsense plain momos!
Next we were served the syapta or ‘the Sikkimese styled chilli chicken’. The chicken was well done and was oozing with flavours. The perfect chilli chicken which can be paired with a bowl of fried or plain rice and it’ll become your Sikkimese staple!
Next up, we tasted tingmo, which is a soft, home-cooked bun. Now this is a must-try because the buns were soft and the dip made it even more mouth-watering. We are out of words for this one so you should just head over and try this one yourself! It’s worth it.
Then we faced the thakali thali, an assortment of 3 different traditional Sikkimese dishes with black dal, rice and salad. The thali is huge and if ever you’re feeling big on the appetite front, ORDER this- happy burping to you!
Lastly we were served two traditional sikkimese desserts, one was called the sikarni, a cinnamon flavoured yogurt and the other was a black rice pudding. The sikarni was refreshing and this actually the only acceptable way to finish off the Sikkimese experience. Highly recommended if you make a stop at Nimtho- no excuses please! The black rice pudding was tasty but when compared to the Sikarni, the Sikarni came up on top.
The place has two spaces. The first floor is a dedicated and sprawling indoorsy space and the second floor is an outdoor space which boasts of a much desired calmness! The upper floor is lined with potted plants and the music is not too loud, which gives you ample chances to relax and soak in the aura here. The place is perfect for family dinners and can accommodate large groups as well so be it a fam-jam or a reunion of friends, it can all happen here!
The manager explained the motivation behind including each of the dish in the menu. He told us how ‘Nimtho’ translates to ‘Invitation’ and hence Nimtho effectively is an invitation to dine with a rich Sikkimese experience. He explained the dish names to us and their translation like ‘Sukuti’ mean ‘dry meat’, ‘Sadheko’ means ‘Marinated by hand’, ‘Tareko’ is deep fried etc.
From the bamboo-laden menu to the rose gold brass vessels, the entire restaurant virtually relocates you to Kingdom of Sikkim and how! Nimtho makes sure you to push you towards an enriching experience every time you step foot inside their restaurant. They take every measure to make your experience as authentic as possible, from using traditional cooking techniques to using traditional decor and music.
