Ministry of Civil Aviation on Tuesday released a vision document which states that at least 31 cities in India will have two airports by 2040 and Delhi-Mumbai will have a third airport.

The report was released for the Global Aviation Summit held in Mumbai and it says that the air traffic in such cities in the coming years would make having a third airport a necessity.

The report also said that most large airports in India are expected to be saturated in the coming 10-15 years. The report also suggests that India is likely to have 190 to 200 operational airports and the commercial airline fleet is expected to grow from 622 (March 2018) to about 2,359 (March 2040).

Around 150,000 acres of land would need to be acquired and the capital investment (excluding the cost of acquiring land) is expected to go over 40-50 billion US Dollars.

In a news reported by HT, a civil aviation ministry official said that the government is considering establishing a NABH (Next Generation Airports for Bharat) Nirman Fund (NNF) with a basic capital structure of approximately $2 billion to support low traffic airports that are in their initial phases.

It is also reported that Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Bengaluru, Patna, Kolkata, Pune, Ahmedabad, Visakhapatnam, Jaipur and Rajkot are among the cities that will require a second airport by 2030. It is expected that more cities will join this list by 2035.
