The DTC is perhaps the most used public transport in Delhi, followed closely by Delhi metro. The local buses are certainly a boon for residents across the national capital, largely due to the low prices and the fact that they take you pretty much anywhere in the city.

Now, following the proposed move to make DTC buses free for women, the authorities are planning on making them safer as well and are looking to implement the free travel change as soon as they can.

In the past few months, there were reports that many of the DTC buses would have a total of four panic buttons and three CCTV cameras. Now, after much thought, the plan is to install a total of 10 panic buttons across these buses. Additionally, the CCTVs have already been installed in many of the buses. The goal is to have 5 buttons on either side of the bus, so it is more accessible to female passengers.

Both of these- the cameras and the panic buttons will be linked to a control where live feed can be taken in directly. With the help of this, the responsible authorities can take swift action on wrongdoers and rule breakers. In addition to that, the control room will also allow for two way communication between the driver and the authorities, which makes travelling in buses safer indeed.

Delhi-Bus

As for the free travel in DTC buses for women, the plan is to implement it as soon as possible. The DTC authorities have been looking for a way to seamlessly put the change into place and now, they aim to do so with the help of special passes. The Delhi government was faced with two options- to issue tickets but not take money or identify free travellers with the help of special passes.

Furthermore, the Delhi government stated that it would be thier duty to reimburse the DTC for the loss in revenue that they would obviously face. As of now, there is a provision for free travel in buses, but it can only be availed by war widows and the differently abled.

At any rate, these new changes look like they’re here to stay. We are glad to see that some beneficial changes are actually making their way into the way that the DTC functions and soon, it will become a very safe mode of public transport.
