When it comes to public transport, Delhi is a city with some of the best conveniences. You've got the metro- that takes you over long distances while the DTC and cluster scheme buses are great for those short distance rides. To make matters even better for commuters, the authorities have decided that they will introduce a total of 2,000 new buses to the DTC's fleet and of these, 1,000 will be electric buses.

What's the update?

According to reports, the regular, CNG powered DTC buses have been confirmed and they should make their way into the regular fleet of buses by the end of this year. The decision was sealed on Friday, after a tender was passed.

As for the electric buses however, a tender will be floated in early August and will be approved following that. In addition, earlier also, there were plans to introduce state of the art electric buses that go easy on the environment.

Low floor buses

Back in 2010, the DTC had inducted over 3,000 DTC buses that still run on the streets of Delhi. By the year 2011, there were almost 6,000 buses that were commuting across the city but due to mechanical wear and tear of the buses, the number of buses has once again fallen down to around 3,000 buses. The DTC has plans to make each bus run for at least 12 years.

As for the new CNG buses, there are plans to have at least 1,000 more of them so that the authorities can better manage the entire public system transport. The main benefit of adding new buses to the fleet is that they will help increase the frequency of buses on almost all routes, which could lead to less crowded buses. Additionally, these buses will be state of the art, low floor buses with air conditioning and other similar facilities.

Electric buses

The 1,000 electric buses will be put into place in different phases. As of now, the authorities are still procuring the buses that were approved earlier and will roll out 375 buses in the first phase. The move for electric buses is being pushed rather fast as it will help the environment and also make Delhi a more future proof city on the whole.

These buses too will make their way into Delhi by December this year or early January next year.
