With rising academic pressure to get into premier institutes or to have a successful career, the preps usually start from a really young age.

The preparations usually mean several pages of homework, 2-3 books per subject and of course, the extra baggage for other class activities! While all of this is a regular routine for thousands of children attending schools, the Delhi Government has actually identified some major problems with this arrangement.

The Delhi Government authorities have strictly instructed schools in the city to ensure implementation of guidelines on reducing the weight of school bags. Although the HRD Ministry had formed this particular guideline back in 2016, it wasn't truly followed down to the jot or tittle.

No more Homework & Heavy Bags

To ensure that students don’t get bogged down with the weight of their school bags, the authorities have capped down homework for children belonging to classes 1 and 2. The principals and teachers have been instructed to frame a well-designed time table for classes so that children do not have to carry too many textbooks or notebooks to school every day!

It has been said that students will not be asked to bring extra books or materials and also, the schools will be providing for fresh drinking water so that students don’t have to carry anything extra at all.

Officials say-

According to reports by News18, a senior official of the Directorate of Education (DoE) stated, "We have sent fresh directive to schools to ensure strict implementation of guidelines. Heavy school bags are a serious threat to the health and well-being of school students.”

"Heavy school bags have a severe, adverse physical effect on growing children which can cause damage to their vertebral column and knees. Moreover, in schools which are functioning in double or multi-storey buildings, the children have to climb stairs with heavy school bags which further aggravates the problem. It also causes anxiety in them," the official added further.
