The fatal black fungus infection has emerged as a successive threat for COVID patients during the second surge of the pandemic across India. On Monday, the tally of mucormycosis patients at Goa’s Apex Hospital stood at 10. While one of the patients succumbed to it, the other 9 are still fighting the perils of this infection. The hospital authorities are ensuring that these patients receive proper treatment, by setting up a dedicated ward where multispecialty doctors will consult on their cases.
3 infected patients need surgical treatment
After the penalising surge of the pandemic, Goa has fallen prey to the horrors of COVID-induced fungal infection. As reported on Monday, the count of covid patients with black fungus in Goa’s Apex Hospital has reached the double digits, as the tally stands at 10.
Out of these 10 patients, 6 have received nursing, 3 are in need of surgical treatment and one of the patients, passed away last week due to a high CT score. The officials stated that all patients who are currently suffering from black fungus infection, had been administered steroids during COVID treatment. Further, it has also been reported that all these patients suffer from high diabetes.
Mitigating the aftermath of black fungus
The treatment of black fungus requires multispecialty, hence, consultants from different departments will be working in collaboration with each other. Also, a special space- Ward Number 102, has been dedicated at the medical college to especially treat patients who have contracted the black fungus.
