The second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic has taken the country by storm. As of now, there are over 21,59,134 active cases in India. The worst-hit states with soaring active cases include Maharashtra, with 6,83,856 cases, Uttar Pradesh with 2,23,544 cases and Karnataka with 1,59,158 cases. Needless to say, the situation is pretty bad but there are a number of things you should know about the second wave of the COVID-19 virus. So here we have listed the details of the new tests, symptoms and precautions, to help you cope better!

What precautions to take?

Since the virus has been around for a year now, most Indians know how to keep themselves safe. However, the best ways to ensure your safety are- wear a proper face mask, sanitize your hands after touching anything from outside and finally, stay indoors at all costs.

When to get tested?

Even after taking precautions, if you feel like you have the following symptoms, get yourself checked.

  • Fever
  • Body Aches
  • Chills
  • Breathlessness
  • No sense of smell & taste
  • Been in close contact with a COVID-19 patient for a total of 15 minutes or more

A few other, less common symptoms include

  • Diarrhoea
  • Pink Eyes
  • Hearing Impairment
It is of utmost importance to get yourself tested if you or anyone near you has the aforementioned symptoms. Since there are several COVID tests now, you should know which test is right for you.

Which test to undertake?

Opt for a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) for an instant report. If RAT is negative and there are symptoms, undertake an RT-PCR test! Incidentally, if the RAT test is positive, you should start quarantining. You should also consult a doctor, so that you can start medication right away.

If you want a more comprehensive report, then go in for an RT-PCR test. Other tests include the D’dimer Test or the qCRP, which can scan the body for the virus more effectively. Certain doctors also say that the latest wave has led to new and rare symptoms such as blood clotting, in which case, these tests will be required.

You can also opt for a CT scan, which will reveal your CT Value and CT Score.

Difference between CT Value & CT Score

If by chance your RT-PCR test is negative, even if you have persistent symptoms and respiratory issues, go for a CT Scan, which will reveal your CT Value and CT Score. Cycle Threshold Value is a marker for the viral load in a patient. Lower the CT Value, higher the severity.

Doctors may conduct CT Scan of the patient’s chest to determine the CT Score. A high score is directly proportional to the infection’s intensity

When NOT TO test?

If 2 weeks have passed after taking both the doses of vaccination & there are no symptoms, then testing is not required even after coming in contact with a COVID patient.
