Once a dwelling of the Maharaja of Jaipur in Delhi which also serves as the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), Jaipur House has been restored to its former magnificence following after year-long renovations.

This 20th century mansion will soon be accessible to the public with a retrospective exhibition of Padma Shri Upendra Maharathi, a Buddhist and Gandhian artist. The artworks have been digitalized and memories of Amrita Sher-Gil and M F Husain are a proud part of it.

Exhibiting approximately 1,000 artworks, Maharathi’s daughter Mahashweta donated the works for display and it is spread throughout the interiors in divergent art forms-architecture, textile, painting, crafts, bamboo, sculpture, ceramics and so on! There’s also a meditation room in the remembrance of Maharathi who was fond of this practice and soothing music in the background sets the mood for it.

A colossal bamboo structure has been erected in here, with the artist's diary pages featured on its glass panels and it covers an entire hall of the Jaipur House! This edifice is a testimony to the traditional crafts practiced by him.

The exhibition which has been curated by Gadanayak and his team, will also unravel a set of unique chairs that Maharathi designed for Buddhist monasteries and our camera’s can’t wait to capture ‘em all. (Provided that they allow photography inside this architectural wonder.)

In another hall, there’s a hollow yet braided wooden structure which has been assembled without hammer and nail and it pays an artistic tribute to the globally famous Jagannath temple in Odisha, which was Maharathi's birthplace. The authorities have also made an attempt to reconstruct his studio, which shows his paintings of Gandhi in his signature style!

The Queen's Room in this bastion, with its ethereal appeal has been restored with intricacy and the fireplaces that had once been sealed with wooden partitions, have been unbolted.

The exhibition is now awaiting an inauguration ceremony and as per the reports of NGMA, it will possibly be executed by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
