We’ve all been there- we have to get to a place urgently using the metro, but the smart card is out of charge. Recharging the smart card is a tedious procedure, because there is always the hurry of catching the metro and reaching on time. To make this an issue of the past, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has passed a move to have new smart cards that automatically recharge themselves. Here’s all you need to know about these new “Autope” metro cards.

ONE Card that was proposed for DTC and DMRC

No longer do you have to stand in the long queues and god forbid that you have to purchase a token. To make the automatically recharging metro cards a reality, the DMRC has roped in a private player- Anduril Technologies Private Ltd- which will help develop the technology required.

How will the new cards work?

Firstly, the “Autope” cards can be linked to any existing banks, unlike the few that banks themselves offer. These cards will also eliminate the need for online recharge- which is quite prevalent and convenient, but the cards have to manually be presented at the AVM points in the metro stations.

Within the Autope cards, users can set a limit and when the balance level goes below the threshold, the amount will be automatically be deducted from your bank account. This is a very convenient change in the metro smart cards and we’re for sure gonna get these cards as soon as we can. To avail of these smart cards, users can register for them and will be able to use them from mid- July.

As per the DMRC, smart cards are used by approximately 16-17 lakh people on a daily basis. The fact that all of them can make use of this new system is a great addition and could even make for less crowded metro stations. Apart from that, there are also talks to have a universal smart card that can be used in pretty much any public transport for a given number of trips.
