Satiate your wanderlust with a virtual exploration of THESE 7 ghats of Kanpur

Kanpur's Bithoor area was once known as 'Bavan Ghaton ki Nagari' (City of 52 Ghats).

Kanpur lies along the banks of River Ganga and owing to this, it is home to numerous ghats, each of which has a unique aspect attached to it. In fact, Kanpur's Bithoor area was once known as 'Bavan Ghaton ki Nagari' (City of 52 Ghats), of which only 29 survived the Revolt of 1857, industrialisation and other adventitious projects. In an attempt to acquaint you with the historical and religious significance of this city, we have planned an offbeat digital tour along the 7 ghats of Kanpur that you ought to know about!

Patthar Ghat

Carved out of red sandstone, Patthar Ghat is considered to be among the most scenic pier structures dotting the landscape of Kanpur. It was built by Raja Tikaitrai in the 19th-century and with many cinematic productions shot with it as a background, this ghat has become synonymous with the aesthetics of Kanpur.

Sarsaiyya Ghat

The barren land that can be seen in this picture was once laden with the lush green treen of Sarsai Forest and the Sarsaiyya Ghat area was used by British troops storage of armaments. 150 years later, while these historical structures have fallen prey to time-bound deterioration, tourists throng to this place to witness the Ganga Mela festival and Ganga Aarti.

Lakshman Ghat

Ghats are mostly associated with Hindu temples as the ancient tradition of offering holy water to the Higher Being, around sunrise, demanded such an architecture. What demarcates Laksham Ghat from others is that it also has a mosque on its premises. This secular outlook owes its origin to Almas Ali Khan, who was entrusted with the administration of Bithoor by Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula in the 18th-century.

Kalvari Ghat

Kalvari Ghat on the banks of River Ganga in Kanpur has reserved a special spot in history for it is home to the famous Ganesha Temple, believed to be built by the Peshwas. This ghat is one of the most scenic spots of the city where you can sit and contemplate as you hear the sound of birds chirping.

Brahmavart Ghat

Popularly tagged as the 'holiest of the holy ghats of Bithoor', Brahmavart Ghat is said to hold spiritual significance. Mythological tales have led the practicers of Hinduism to believe that this is the place where Lord Brahma brought mankind into existence. The mystical aura of this place is something that can only be experienced, not explained!

Parmat Ghat

If you wish to experience a day roaming around snaking pathways that exude the old-world charm, then the area near Parmat Ghat will perfectly suit your mood. While you are here, you can soothe your religious penchants by visiting the famous Anandeshwar Temple. Apart from this, this ghat will also cater to the aesthete in you with terrific sunrise or sunset views!

Satti Chaura Ghat

Satti Chaura Ghat has been immortalised in the annals of history for the role it played during the Revolt of 1857. It was here that Indians, led by Nana Saheb, registered a victory over the troops of East India Company. Popularly known as Massacre Ghat, the tranquil aura of this place stands in juxtaposition to the gory battles it has seen!

Knock Knock

When seen through a keen eye, Kanpur has a lot to offer in tourism, apart from the generic touristy destinations. We hope that as you embark upon an exploration of these 7 ghats when the pandemic recedes, you uncover an interesting journey that you can document in your travelogue.
