Kanpur girl, Sugandhaa Pandey has given the city yet another reason to stand tall and proud. Stepping closer to her dream of getting a PhD and becoming a professor, she has bagged AIR 21 in GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test) 2021 which Pandey has stated as an unexpected yet welcoming surprise. A scholar through and through, Sugandhaa has paved her to unbelievable opportunities with her grit, passion and never-lose-hope success mantra, and this is her story!
A story of success; marked by luck, loss and lots of hope!
Sugandhaa’s story may not be a prodigy but surely hits home, too close. An eventful set of events, right influence and motivation formed stepping stones for the Kanpur Girl, turning her dream into reality. A little extra effort, a little more than just hope, setbacks of rejections and dying opportunities to study abroad due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this tale has all the elements that makes it a start seller and here we are, bringing it before the world to acknowledge and appreciate.
She passed her graduation as the third rank holder with distinction and headed towards Lady Shri Ram in Delhi to pursue a Masters Degree in Philosophy. Here also, she added another feather of success to her hat of achievement and bagged the fifth position across the Delhi University. Throughout her education, she was motivated to focus on research work and even availed a chance to do so in a dissertation work on ‘Feminist Aesthetics’ during her masters.
But that is when hurdles started arising in her roadmap to success. Sugandhaa told Knocksense that she was rejected from about 10 colleges of her choice and could not apply for Universities abroad because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This was when she started focussing on her career and packed-up her dream to pursue a PhD. But, all is not lost until it’s over! She appeared for the GATE 2021 rather halfheartedly but the results have left her and her family ecstatic.
She told us that though she headed for another direction towards professional aspirations, she did not give up on her academic dreams and the results have proven to harvest her dreams! “This is the first opportunity that I have got and I am very happy about it!” Sugandhaa said, adding that she now hopes to join IIT to get a PhD degree and has targetted institutes at Kanpur and Delhi for her interests align with the research work being conducted here.
Speaking about her success mantra, she only said it is to never lose hope. She graduated in 2019 and faced several setbacks and rejections and had she lost faith then, she wouldn’t be here, beaming brightly at her unexpected trump victory!

GATE 2021 results are now available on the official GOAP website and candidates can download their scorecards from March 30, 2021 to June 30, 2021. Post this, from July 1 2021 to December 31, scorecards can be generated against a fee of ₹500. From January 1, 2022 scorecards will not be available.
As per the guidelines issued by GATE, scorecards will be accessible by only those candidates who have achieved equal to or more than the qualifying marks based on ‘normalised marks’. Other candidates will not get the scorecard.
