Kanpur’s first eye bank has been established at Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) Medical College, marking a significant milestone in eye care for the region. Located within the Hallet Hospital building, the new facility will serve patients from Kanpur and ten neighbouring districts providing crucial support for those in need of corneal transplants.
The new facility, equipped with advanced refrigeration and temperature-controlled storage can preserve 400 corneas.
Eye Bank facility features two state-of-the-art labs for better research
The Ophthalmology Department at GSVM Medical College receives approximately 200 patients daily. Previously, the lack of cornea storage facilities resulted in 30 to 35 patients leaving without treatment. However, with the launch of a new eye bank, the department now has ten times the previous storage capacity and advanced refrigeration systems that preserve corneas for up to a month.
Furthermore, the facility features two state-of-the-art laboratories, developed in collaboration with Sight Savers, USA. This will allow better research and ensure the high-quality preservation of donated corneas.
