After multiple defects were detected in Kanpur’s old Ganga Bridge, it has been closed for the public indefinitely. Constructed during British times, the bridge catered to heavy vehicles despite being in a dilapidated state. Recently, a report prepared by expert officials pointed towards its dangerous condition, concluding that the pillars have lost their strength. Making a note of this, the authorities have decided to shut down this establishment.
IIT Kanpur & Central Road Research Institute to further study the bridge
Reportedly, the aforementioned committee assessed the present state of affairs at the Old Ganga Bridge and concluded that the bridge would collapse in case heavy vehicles are allowed on it for a period of 15 days. Based on these findings, the District Magistrate ordered the setting up of a wall on this bridge on the route from Shuklaganj, thereby restricting commuter traffic.
Reportedly, Mukesh Chandra Sharma, an executive engineer from Public Works Department informed that the pillars have been examined externally so far. It is expected that they may be weak internally as well. Consequently, a letter has been sent to IIT Kanpur and Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) for further analysis.
Established during the British rule over a period of 6 years
As per reports, the bridge was constructed in a period of 6 years during British rule. It was used by the British army and officials for travelling to Kolkata. It is said that the current situation of the bridge is a result of the lags that must have cropped during its construction and maintenance in the past.
If the experts from the technical team are to be believed, the bridge has completed its life and can no longer be used for traffic movements, especially heavy vehicles. Alerted by these observations, the authorities have closed the bridge for an unspecified time.
