The second leg of Kanpur Metro Corridor 1 has received two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) named ‘Nana’ and ‘Tatya’, which will help construction of the underground tunnel between Chunniganj and Nayaganj from the Bada Chauraha Metro station. Both the TBMs have already been lowered inside a rectangular launching shaft of about 21 meters in length, 24 meters wide, and around 17.5 meters deep.
The construction of the underground tunnel was inaugurated by the Acting Managing Director, Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC), Sushil Kumar, who pressed the buzzer in the presence of senior officials and employees of UPMRC.
The two TBMs- ‘Nana’ and ‘Tatya’
The Tunnel Boring Machines which will be used to construct the 5.6-meter diameter underground tunnels, are around 80-meters long and weigh about 450 tonnes. The machines are named ‘Nana’ and ‘Tatya’ by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC), after the great freedom fighters Nana Saheb Peshwa and Tantya Tope
According to reports, under the 23km long Corridor-1 of Kanpur Metro Rail Project (IIT to Naubasta), the underground tunnel between Chunniganj to Nayaganj is around 4 km long. It will take approximately six months to construct the 990-metre-long tunnel from Bada Chauraha to Nayaganj.
On the occasion, Sushil Kumar praised the project and the two state-of-the-art TBMs. “Commencement of tunnel construction work at the underground section between Chunniganj and Nayaganj is a new milestone for Kanpur Metro. The TBM ‘Nana’ and ‘Tatya’ will lead our way to fulfil the dream of a world-class Metro system in Kanpur,” he said.
