Here's looking back at the 29 major developments that Lucknow has seen in the past four years!

Lucknow has seen a rapid change in its cityscape and its lifestyle. The change has been observed in terms of infrastructural developments, the basic lifestyle of people and integration of more modern technology in everyday life. Today, the city is completely different than it was a few years ago, especially during past 4 years. Between the last leap year in 2016 and 2020, Lucknow has changed leaps and bounds.


With another leap year upon us, here's looking back at the 29 major developments that Lucknow has seen in the past four years and everything we are thankful for.

Lucknow Metro

Lucknow Metro began its services on priority corridor from Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport to Charbagh Railway Station, in 2017. This etched Lucknow's name in record books, as the priority corridor was the fastest developed metro route in the country. Metro in Lucknow has become a successful means of transport, with a crrent ridership of over 65,000 people.

 International Cricket Stadium (formerly Ekana)

The Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium was among the biggest developments to happen in Lucknow. The stadium was built with the idea of providing a world class cricket and other sports complex with ultra-modern facilities. The stadium saw an immensely successful match between India and West Indies on 6th November 2018, the first ever T20I to be held in Lucknow!

Lucknow Smart City

A nationwide Smart City Mission was launched in 2015, the same came to Lucknow during the last leap year. Within a few years Lucknow has completed several major projects which include the laying of LPG pipelines, introduction of a smart Integrated Traffic Management System and introduction of several smart bus shelters.

New Hospitals in Lucknow

In the last 4 years, Lucknow has also seen the opening of several new hospitals, these have been big names which were already established in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. The list includes 1000-bed multi speciality Medanta Hospital, an all new Super Speciality Cancer Institute and a 330-bed super speciality Apollo Hospital.

New Airport Terminal

Civil Aviation department of India in 2018 announced that Lucknow will have a new terminal with a capacity of handling 27 million passengers. Though the terminal is still under development and is expected to be operational by 2021, Lucknow Airport has been handling domestic and international flights since 2012 (the previous leap year).

New High Court

The humongous and highly impressive building of the Lucknow bench Allahabad High Court was completed in 2016. It is one of the more impressive modern day developments that have taken place in the city.

New Malls

Though the city had many shopping complexes and malls, between 2016 and 2020 several new ones were developed in Lucknow. These include the Crown Mall opposite BBD University, the very new Phoenix Pallasio mall near Shaaheed Path and the under construction Lulu Mall- the biggest mall chains in the world, that could possibly open gates for us folks in 2020.

Riverfront Developments

Another new development to happen in Lucknow was the remodelling and development of the Gomti Riverfront. This included cleaning up of Gomti which was often referred to as the biggest 'drain' in Lucknow. This development ensured a cleaner Gomti and a cleaner, more developed shore.

Shift in Lucknow's Nightlife

Lucknow's nightlife has seen a drastic change in the past few years. Within the past few years several new bars, cafes and food outlets were opened in Lucknow which completely changed the culture of the city. The nightlife which was majorly non-existent was infused with a new energy and life in the last few years, making Gomti Nagar the hub of all nocturnal fun!

Lucknow-Agra Expressway

The Lucknow-Agra e-way was inaugurated on 21st November 2016. This expressway was made with the idea to lighten the traffic on the already congested roads of the city and shorten the distance between Lucknow and Agra. This connects to the Yamuna e-way making the journey from lucknow to Delhi and Noida, a smoother and much less time consuming.

Charbagh Renovations

Another addition to the thriving city was the renovation of the iconic Charbagh Railway Station. Proposed in 2017 the project included a complete interior overhaul of the station building making it no less than an international airport and addition of various modern amenities. This was done while keeping the exterior intact in order to maintain the heritage quotient of the building.

Gomti Nagar Railway Station

A new railway station is under construction in Gomti Nagar with an aim to provide Lucknow with state of the art railway station. From luxury trains to basic amenities, the new station aims to impress the residents of Lucknow with all the goodies it has to offer.

Lucknow- Delhi Tejas Express

Lucknow Delhi Tejas Express was a major undertaking that brought huge relief to passengers travelling between the two cities. This new and ultra-modern train facility has been all about luxury and speed. The train has received great response from people in both of these cities and makes travelling much less irksome.

Cycle Tracks

Cycle tracks were yet another gift that Lucknow received during this leap year. The narrow tracks which have been made across the city allow pedestrians and bicycle riders to move in the city without any hindrance. These have been especially beneficial for kids who generally go to school of bikes.

Open Air Gyms

In the last leap year several open air gyms have been started in Lucknow. With an aim to promote a healthy lifestyle and ensure people get enough "outdoor air" and "sunshine" these gyms have been a hit among the people in Lucknow. The civic bodies have even undertaken the idea to develop gyms with great facilities in prominent parks of the city and we cannot be more thrilled about them!

Development of IT City

After 2017, an IT City was developed in lucknow with major investment from HCL. The development of IT City began in 2016 itself and today has made Lucknow an emerging hub of IT with HCL looking to enrich its workforce by 50%. This has created a number of job opportunities for the people of Lucknow.

Startup Ecosystem

In the last 4 years Lucknow has also emerged as a major start-up ecosystem. The Uttar Pradesh government's lucrative startup policy is abetting young minds to open their business in the city itself. These are not only generating better job opportunities for Lucknow but enabling people to grow small businesses from the ground up. Knocksense, Trendsetterz, Purplehide and Ziffy are among the famous startups from Lucknow.

Purvanchal Expressway

Another addition to the infrastructure and connectivity to Lucknow is the Purvanchal Expressway. This 6-lane expressway is currently under construction and will connect the historic towns of Ballia and Azamgarh with the state capital, Lucknow.

Kisan Path and Outer Ring Road Project

Part of the ambitious 108 kilometre 'outer ring road project' the kisan path is a 15 kilometre stretch which connects the Sultanpur to Faizabad Road in Lucknow. The entire outer ring road project is expected to decongest the roads of Lucknow which are already brimming with traffic.

Heritage Arc Development

The development of the heritage arc- Agra, Lucknow, Varanasi has been big for Lucknow. It brought major development to the area near Clock Tower and Bada Imambara, a project which completely changed the face of Lucknow. It included renovation of the Imambara and Rumi Darwaza as well as major maintenance and beautification of the area near the Clock Tower.

Smart Bus Stands

A huge part of the Lucknow Smart City initiative, smart bus stands have made quite an impression on the residents of the city. Equipped with modern facilities such as bio toilets and sheltered waiting area, these have put a smile on the faces of daily commuters.

New Waste management System

Another big addition to the Lucknow Smart City Project, is the new waste management system that was launched earlier in January this year. This new initiative comprised of new door-to-door waste collection vehicles, waste collection trucks and even a new robot that cancels out the need of manual scavenging.

Flights to cities within UP

Another development that happened in 2020 was the introduction of several new domestic flights from the Lucknow airport. Though still under development, this project aims to establish air links between Lucknow and other major cities in UP including Varanasi, Ghaziabad, Bareilly, Hindon and Prayagraj.

First ever Defence Expo in Lucknow

This was also the year when the first ever Defence Expo took place in Lucknow. Lucknow saw a never-before-seen showcasing of armour, military equipments and a full fledged airshow complete with some of the most amazing aircrafts in the world.

First ever Investors Summit in Lucknow

Lucknow also played host to the first ever UP investors summit which brought in millions of dollars worth of investment to UP. Organised in 2018 and then again in 2019, the summit brought in deals for over 4.3 lakh crores to UP!

100 years of Lucknow University

2020 was also the year when Lucknow University completed its 100 years. The iconic campus of Lucknow which has taught and hone millions of students over the years, opened its gates to a huge celebration and is expected to carry them for the entire year.

New Food Delivery Services in Lucknow

During the last leap year, Lucknow saw a shift in its food culture as well. Several food delivery outlets made Lucknow their home and ensured that the residents of this city always have something delicious to nosh on. Many cloud kitchens and delivery only joints also opened shop during this time in the city which makes our joy double-fold!

Butterfly Park in Lucknow Zoo

In order to attract more visitors and make the zoo more interesting, a butterfly park was opened in the Lucknow Zoo. This not only added to the overall charm of the zoo but made it a hotspot for kids and people who enjoy nature in all its splendour.

Knocksense 'started up' in Lucknow

Knocksense is another small development that happened in 2016. We started with a handful of people and a head full of ideas and became one of the most loved 'News' platforms in India with over a million readers. We have come a long way and hope to keep giving Lucknow the best of everything we can find in the city.

A leap year has come and gone, Lucknow has seen many developments, many ups and downs and we have come to realise there's still no city like home. Let's hope the next four years bring a lot more growth and development for the city as well as us.

The UPMRC has shared the ridership count of the Lucknow Metro and the soaring tally, crossing the 15,000 mark, indicate the popularity of the public transport system among citizens. The Managing Director of the Uttar Pradesh Metro Corporation congratulated the entire staff and support team for the achievement.

Schools in Lucknow could open soon as UPSA drafts proposal for re-opening of schools in UP

The State government has to decide upon re-opening of the schools by September 30

The Unaided Private Schools Association (UPSA) has submitted a proposal draft to the Uttar Pradesh State Government ahead of its decision regarding the re-opening of schools that have been shut due to the rampant spread of the coronavirus. The draft suggests the state to re-start schools for classes 10th and 12th on a trial basis for 10 days by October 12, which can be later scaled up for all the classes by the month of November.

COVID-19 Lucknow update: New guidelines permit the entry of only 'serious buyers' in malls

Two nodal officers would be deployed to ensure health safety measures at the malls & shopping complexes.

In the wake of rapid spread of the coronavirus in Lucknow, the city administration has established new precautionary and restricting guidelines. These new set of rules restrict the entry of those who visit malls for only show-window shopping or hanging out; that is, malls in Lucknow will only open their gates to 'serious buyers', that too with protective gear in place. The guidelines make it obligatory for all visitors and staff to undergo proper thermal checks as well. Apart from this, two nodal officers would be deployed to ensure health safety measures at the malls and shopping complexes.

Two royal bred horses added to Lucknow's La Martiniere College's stable

Endangered Kathwadi breed horses are now a part of La Martiniere's stable

La Martiniere Collge adds two more rare species to its stables, in the beautiful form of Bajirao, a five-year-old stallion and Anandi, an eight-year-old mammoth mare, both of the Kathwadi endangered breed from Western India. These royally-bred horses were gifted to the college by Monish Bhandari and his wife, Priya, members of the college alma mater. The horses arrived at the college grounds on Saturday in a special air-conditioned vehicle from the farm of Mumbai and Ajmer.
