Malihabadi Dasheri

The Malihabad mango belt is renowned for its Dasheri variety, which is recognised by its green peels and wholesome taste. 'Mango Man', Kaleem Ullah Khan, is a native resident of this place and it is majorly due to his innovative efforts that this destination has grown into the mango hub of North India.

Chausa of Hardoi

Another hotspot in Uttar Pradesh for mango lovers is Hardoi, a place famous for the Chausa variety of mango. As the name suggests, the pulp of this mango is squeezed and slurped, straight out of the fruit with bare hands. Interestingly, it is believed that Sher Shah Suri immortalised his love for Chausa by recognising the battle where he defeated Humanyun, as the Battle of Chausa!

Banarasi Langra

Native to Varanasi, this oval-shaped mango variety is set to receive a GI tag. The identification mark of a Banarasi Langra is its green skin, even when ripe. Legends say, that this mango variant first appeared in the orchard of a farmer who was langra (unable to walk), hence it was christened after him.

Lucknow Safeda

Safeda from Lucknow, has established its specific customer base with its predominantly sweet and slightly sour taste. This exceptional mango type is low in fibre content and its lemon-green peel turns bright yellow when the fruit is fully ripe.

Ratol of Meerut

A small sized variety of mango, Ratol (or Rataul) once became a flashpoint for India and Pakistan. The competitive spirit of sports was soon transferred to the domain of mango export, when the latter sent a box of their best mangoes- Anwar Ratol. As per stories, the original growers in Meerut were upset and informed that Ratol belonged to a garden called Shora-e-Afaq. There were two brothers who owned it and one of them, Anwar, migrated to Pakistan and named the variety after himself.

Gaurjeet of Gorakhpur

Gaurjeet is a lesser-known mango variety, which acts as an unforgettable reminder of sweetness, for the residents of Gorakhpur and the nearby Terai region. Staying a step ahead of all other kinds, Gaurjeet ripens around mid-May and is available in the market until mid-June.

Malda of Varanasi

Among the famous types of mango in north India, Malda is a Langra variant from Varanasi, which is non-fibrous but has the same sweet-sour taste. Owing to these two qualities, Malda is best-suited to make different mango chutneys, which are often enjoyed with meals during summers.
