In an attempt to identify the beggars in the city and provide them with a better life, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation has gone out on a limb to give them jobs and rehabilitate them on the basis of their educational qualifications. For a long time now, the local beggars have had to live in penury and terrible conditions. With this new change, their lives are set to get better and the LMC aims to get them back on their feet.
This news comes a few days after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had instructed the LMC to do so. The move is a humanitarian one and will certainly herald a better life for the beggars. The LMC has noted beggars in several areas and will soon carry out surveys to understand how educated they are. Following that, they will also provide them with minimum wage jobs to help them lead a self sustained life.
As for handicapped vagabonds, they will be put in shelters and care homes so that they have at least the basic necessities. The beggars will undergo a training that will equip them in their jobs, which are of a number of types. Most of them will work in sanitation related departments and will help clear out garbage by partaking in door to door trash collection from homes. All of these developments come as part of the beggars' rehabilitation programme.
One major issue that the LMC has not yet tackled is to get a hold of beggars and identify which ones are fit for work. However, the authorities have roped in a few other players as well who will help them identify and locate the beggars, collect their documents and take care of other administrative duties. As of now, however, the move has not been implemented but when it is, you'll see a lot less vagrants in the streets of Lucknow.
