Shot in Lucknow, THESE 5 short films carry soulful depictions of LGBTQIA+ folks from UP!

Optimistic and encouraging, all these short films inherently dream of a day when being queer is not taboo anymore.

Amid the clutches of regressive social norms, queer lives are often lived in the shadows, away from the limelight of the mainstream world. Though the fight ahead still involves a long and arduous journey, we can create an inclusive environment for LGBTQIA+ folks by understanding their issues, in their own light. So, here are 5 heart- touching short films telling tales of queer individuals from Lucknow and other towns of Uttar Pradesh, that deserve to be on your binge-list!

I am what I am, so take me as I am!

Coming out is a choice, is what they say but who doesn't wish to celebrate the blossoming and beautiful life under the sunshine! Tanzeel's story blooms on these lines, navigating through his journey of 'coming out' to his parents, friends, family and the society at large. Besides the courage that sparkles in this conversational movie, it is the simplicity of the message being delivered by the protagonist that will leave a lasting impression on your heart!

Love you the way you are, my child!

We frequently fail to recognise that certain queer lives come trapped within strings of internal conflicts and complexities. While parental support becomes a necessity here, it is not easy to seek that. On the contrary, Jatin is the story of a young transgender individual, who finds love and acceptance in the arms of her mother. After years of internalised turmoil, when the kid is welcomed for she is, it rejuvenates the lacking lustre of her life!

Re-interpreting yourself the religious way!

Queer people are often made to believe that their troubles are a consequence of their own actions and religion becomes a crucial instrument to this end. Paving the way to self-acceptance by re-interpreting the basic tenets of religion, Jerry tells the tale of a 21-year-old guy kick-starting his life, as a queer individual. Amalgamating personal aspirations with a social appeal, this coming-of-age story can motivate one to embrace his/her true self!

Finding a family away from the 'family'!

While we all crave to be loved and accepted by our families for who we are, the reality stands miles apart from the truth of our dreams sometimes. Despite this, we can all find a breeding ground for our simplest desires amid an alternate chosen family and Jitendra's story is testimony to this fact. Unlocking his true expression amongst his friends and peers, this short film talks about finding confidence outside the confines of one's home!

Seeking solace in a sister!

When you have lived with a secret for a long time, it is not easy to find a mate you can confine in. During such times, it is important to trust your instincts and take the bold step ahead, just like Ali did! This short film will inspire you to seek support and break the shackles of fear, irrespective of what the secret is. Believe it or not, a warm hug of companionship can usher remarkable positive changes in your life!

Winning widespread acclaim across international borders!

Entwining sensitive issues and moving life-journeys, these short films have triumphed in garnering global fame and recognition. Adroit in their narrative, some of these were screened at the 22nd International AIDS conference in Amsterdam and won multiple accolades too.

Notably, most of these short films have been directed by Yadavendra Singh Darvesh, an LGBTQIA activist and the pioneer of Lucknow's Awadh Queer Pride walks. Shot with support from The Humsafar Trust, Mumbai and Multi-Country South Asia HIV program, they can surely change your perspective about the queer community!

Knock Knock

Optimistic and encouraging, all these short films inherently dream of a day when being queer is not taboo anymore! While some may sympathise with the issue, what would really bridge the gap is the trait of empathy. So, if we really wish to propel change, we must appreciate the diversity of human existence and consequently, there will be ample space for everyone to grow and prosper!
