THESE 5 postage stamps chart an unconventional route of Lucknow's history

A picture speaks a thousand words. Let's explore how!

Though e-mails, Whatsapp and other social media apps have drastically changed the way we communicate, the Indian Post and Telegraph Department regularly issues postage stamps. Apart from giving an opportunity to philatelists to embark upon a poetic endeavour, these stamps recognise and immortalise historical moments. For the importance that Lucknow holds in the annals of history, its story has been chronicled via these 5 stamps which you must make a note of, whether you are a collector or not!

Munshi Newal Kishore

Munshi Newal Kishore is remembered by many as the Caxton of India as he is credited with publishing more than 5000 books across almost 10 languages. He established Newal Kishore Press and Book Depot in 1858, at Lucknow, which promoted oriental studies by preserving important texts, at a crucial time when the world of literature was registering a change from manuscript culture to book culture.

Lucknow GPO

A series of postage stamps commemorating postal heritage buildings was released by the Indian Post in 2010. Among the General Post Offices (GPOs) that were featured was Lucknow GPO, which stands as a testimony to the changing times. This building was once a Ring Theatre used by British families for recreational purposes. Further, Lucknow GPO is the place where Gandhiji met Jawahar Lal Nehru for the first time when he arrived at Lucknow for an INC session.

Sarojini Naidu

A political activist, feminist and poet, Sarojini Naidu was appointed as the governor of United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh) in 1947. She retained her position until she breathed her last at Lucknow in 1949. Also included in her list of firsts is her election to the post of President of the Indian National Congress, as the first woman of Indian origin. She has been fondly remembered in the annals of history with the tag of Nightingale of India.

Begum Hazrat Mahal

The Indian Posts and Telegraph Department issued stamps in the memory of the Indian Freedom Fighters. Remembered among the valiant heroes is Begum Hazrat Mahal, who led the City of Nawabs through the Seige of Lucknow. Although driven from post to pillar, she didn't stop fighting against the Britishers for whom her hatred and contempt were never hidden. Born with a silver spoon in her mouth, Begum Hazrat Mahal was miles away from Lucknow when she breathed her last in Nepal in 1879.

King George's Medical College

Marking the completion of 100 academic years of King George's Medical University, a centenary stamp was issued as the Indian Post and Telegraph Department joined the celebrations. The foundation of this leading medical facility was laid by the then Prince of Wales. In 2002, the status of this institute was shifted from 'college' to 'university', whereby, it was rechristened as Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University (CSMMU). Notable alumni of this institute include Dr. Naresh Trehan, Dr. Sunil Pradhan and Dr. Anil Kohli, among others.

Stamp Issued Date: 23 December 2011

Knock Knock

A picture speaks a thousand words- this is probably the idea behind continuing the tradition of printing stamps, even though the art of writing letters and postcards is slowly being lost to technological inventions. Needless to say, these stamps also cater to the penchant of Indian philatelists and if you too belong to this community, then we hope that this listicle is a gateway to happiness for you!
