For all the pet parents out there, traveling with your furry companion on a flight for the first time might feel overwhelming. Whether you’re relocating to a new city or planning a holiday, the good news is that flying with pets in India is not only possible but is also supported by most airlines.

With the right preparation, you can make this experience stress-free for both you and your furry companion. From understanding airline policies to packing the right essentials, here’s an extensive guide to help you navigate the process like a pro.

Here’s how to do it

Choosing the right airlines:

Before you book a flight, it’s crucial to research airline policies regarding pet travel. Indian airlines like Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet allow pets (only dogs or cats), but each has unique guidelines.

For instance, Air India permits small pets, puppies and kittens to travel in the cabin, provided the combined weight of the pet and carrier does not exceed 5 kg. Akasa Air also permits cabin travel for pets with a weight limit of 7 kg. Larger pets, however, must travel in the cargo hold.

On the other hand, IndiGo restricts pets to cargo only. You’ll also want to check if your pet’s breed is permitted. Some airlines have restrictions on brachycephalic breeds (dogs with short muzzles and flattened faces due to their genetics) like Pugs or Persian cats due to their sensitivity to high altitudes. For the latest policies and to book a pet-inclusive ticket, visit airline websites directly:

  • Air India’s pet travel policy

  • IndiGo’s pet travel policy

Booking a Ticket: Things to keep in mind

Once you’ve chosen the airline, it’s time to reserve your spot. Most airlines require advance notification if you’re flying with a pet, as they have a limited number of slots per flight. When booking, specify whether your pet will travel in the cabin or cargo, and provide the airline with your pet’s weight, breed and other details.

Always double-check the flight schedule and ensure your booking aligns with your pet’s comfort—avoid long layovers. Flying during quieter hours reduces stress for both you and your pet.

Documentation and necessary requirements

Before flying, ensure all necessary documents are in order:

  • Health Certificate: A visit to the veterinarian is mandatory before your trip. Obtain a fitness-to-fly certificate from a registered veterinarian, issued within 10 days of travel.

  • Vaccination Records: Keep updated vaccination records, including rabies certification, as these are mandatory.

  • ID Proof: Some airlines require a copy of the owner’s identification along with the pet’s documents.

  • Make sure your pet wears a collar with a visible ID tag: The tag should contain your contact details. Additionally, carry recent photographs of your pet in case of emergencies.

Your pet’s comfort is paramount during the flight. Pack a travel kit with the following:

  • A collapsible water bowl

  • Enough food for the journey (check airline policies regarding onboard feeding)

  • Waste bags

  • A blanket or toy that smells like home!

Preparing the pet carrier

To transport your pet in the plane’s cargo, a suitable carrier or crate is essential for your pet’s comfort and safety. These factors must be kept in mind before preparing the carrier:

  • Size: The carrier must be spacious enough for your pet to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably.

  • Ventilation: Ensure it has adequate ventilation on at least two sides.

  • Material: For cabin travel, soft-sided carriers are usually acceptable, while cargo requires sturdy, hard-sided crates.

Before the journey, familiarize your pet with the carrier. Let them spend time in it, associating it with positive reinforcement like treats or toys.

Preparing your pet for travel

Flying can be overwhelming for pets unfamiliar with confined spaces or loud environments. Start training your pet for the journey at least a few weeks in advance.

On the day of flight:

  • On the day of travel, ensure your pet has had some exercise to expend energy and reduce anxiety.

  • Avoid feeding your pet immediately before the flight; instead, provide a light meal 4-6 hours prior.

  • Arrive at the airport early to complete the additional check-in formalities required for pet travel.

Packing essentials for the journey

Before flying, ensure all necessary documents are in order:

  • Health Certificate: Obtain a fitness-to-fly certificate from a registered veterinarian, issued within 10 days of travel.

  • Vaccination Records: Keep updated vaccination records, including rabies certification, as these are mandatory.

  • ID Proof: Some airlines require a copy of the owner’s identification along with the pet’s documents.

Your pet’s comfort is paramount during the flight. Pack a travel kit with the following:

  • A collapsible water bowl

  • Enough food for the journey (check airline policies regarding onboard feeding)

  • Waste bags

  • A blanket or toy that smells like home!

Check-in and onboarding your pet

Reach the airport at least 2-3 hours before the flight to allow time for pet-related formalities. At the check-in counter, hand over your pet’s documents along with the pet in the carrier or crate.

For the security screening for in-cabin pets, you’ll need to remove them from the carrier during security checks. Use a leash to ensure they stay secure.

Handing Over Pets (Cargo): For pets travelling in the cargo hold, you’ll be directed to a separate counter where trained staff will handle your pet. Rest assured, airlines ensure the safety and comfort of pets during transit.

Post-flight care

Once you’ve landed, the first step is to reunite with your pet and check for any signs of distress or discomfort. Allow them to drink water and relax in a quiet corner before continuing their onward journey. If your pet traveled in cargo, verify their health and comfort immediately upon retrieval.

Additional tips:

  • Keep emergency contacts handy. Have the contact information of a vet in your destination city for unforeseen circumstances.

  • Avoid sedatives! While it might seem tempting, sedating pets for flights is discouraged by most veterinarians and airlines due to potential health risks.

In the end, remember that your pet looks to you for reassurance, so stay calm and positive coz your energy makes a big difference. With a bit of planning and care, you’ll both be jet-setting pros in no time.
