13 things you should know about the newly launched Purvanchal Expressway in UP

The inauguration of the Purvanchal Greenfield Expressway touted as India's largest operational expressway, took place in Uttar Pradesh today. The 341-km-long east to west corridor originates from the state capital, Lucknow and stretches eastwards till Ghazipur.

A six-lane road, this expressway also includes a 3.2-km-long air-strip near Sultanpur, which hosted a mega-show during the launch programme. As per reports, vessels of the Indian Air Force took to flight from here during the show, marking its grand opening for the public. The Purvanchal Expressway is pegged to streamline and facilitate both, traffic and development in the eastern regions of the state.

Starting from Lucknow, the Purvanchal Expressway will pass through Barabanki, Amethi, Ayodhya, Sultanpur, Ambedkar Nagar, Azamgarh, Mau and finally end at Ghazipur in eastern UP.

The new corridor is going to facilitate ease of travel and connectivity within the state and otherwise. Travellers from Ghazipur can now reach Delhi in just 10 hours via the Purvanchal Expressway.

As a safety measure, a total of 16 ambulances (02-02 in each package) have been stationed at the Purvanchal Expressway. This facility will ensure quick treatment and transport of the injured to the hospital, in the event of an accident on the expressway.

The Purvanchal Expressway is equipped with Integranted Advanced Traffic Management System to monitor and streamline the smooth flow of highway traffic.

Notably, the Purvanchal Expressway is built on a budget of ₹22,500 crores approximately and aims to drive industrial activities, development and employment in the state.

The expressway is well equipped with 8 state-of-the-art public convenience centers.

Currently, the Purvanchal Expressway is a six-lane facility but has been built in a way to accommodate 2 additional lanes in the future, if the demand arises.

The Pruvanchal Expressway is designed for a top speed of 120 km/h but ideally, all vehicles plying on the expressway will have to limit the speed limit to 100 km/h, added reports.

A 3.2-km stretch of the Purvanchal Expressway at the Kudebhar in Sultanpur district has been developed as an air-strip. This runway will be used for landing and take-off of fighter jets of the Indian Air Force, such as Rafale, Sukhoi or Mirage, during emergency circumstances.

Reportedly, Uttar Pradesh will be the first state in the country to have expressways with two-air strips.

According to the chief oficials of the UP Expressway and Industrial Development Authority, the Purvanchal Expressway has been constructred within record time, despite the perils posed by the pandemic and the consequent lockdowns.

The Purvanachal Expressway was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India, in the presence of UP CM Yogi Adityanath and Governor Anandi Ben Patel, among other key officials.

A 45-minute air show, conducted by the display of IAF aircraft and fighter planes took place during the launch ceremony.
