Traffic rules play an important part in regulating road safety and passenger well-being. Following up on this, the Union Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways is working towards making people aware of some of the existing rules and regulations. In a recent notification, the Ministry highlighted one such regulation where drivers and passengers (even those in the back) are obligated to wear seat belts while travelling in a car.
Compulsory installation of seat-belts and alarms for all passengers
Even though wearing a rear seat belt in the back seat has been mandatory since 2005, passengers seldom pay heed to it. People are unaware that such rule a is mandatory, and think that they are safer in the back seat.
The Union Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways, in a recent notification, has made it mandatory for car manufacturers to install seat belts and alarms in all types of cars (coupes, sedans or SUVs). Along with front, safety alarms will be installed for rear seats too, which will buzz if one doesn’t put on a seat belt.
To make this rule be followed more rigorously, anyone found flouting it will attract penalty under section 194(B)(1) of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019.
