As part of its ongoing infrastructural upgradation, with the aid of PM-USHA funds, the University of Lucknow (LU) is now prepped to give its Art building a facelift.
The iconic quadrangle that was established in 1909, also referred to as Canning College, will soon be revamped. The makeover of the oldest structure on the campus has been budgeted at ₹5 crore, under the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA).
As many as six universities in Uttar Pradesh have received funding under the programme.

The Canning College building, that dates back to the British era, has been in a dilapidated condition for a while, with its ceiling leaking, damp walls and other portions that need immediate attention and repair. In order to safeguard students against any mishap, its renovation has been one the biggest priorities. The block holds classrooms of about 10 departments, proctor and dean offices and three lavish halls.
LU Vice Chancellor Professor Alok Kumar shared, “Canning College was an independent college and existed even before LU was established in 1920. Hence the building is in desperate need of renovation. While the Malviya and AP Sen Hall University have already been renovated with LU funds, next is the major repair work required in classrooms of the art faculty in the building.”
The grant will also help with necessary installations of comfortable furniture, modern amenities in classes of UG and PG students for improved research work conditions and so on.
