Uttar Pradesh now has the highest number of dolphins in India, and the state’s tiger population has also grown from 173 in 2018 to 205 in 2022, according to the recent Forest Department report. Back in March 2025, India’s first-ever River Dolphin Estimation Report was also published, stating Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest population among all states with 2,397 Gangetic Dolphins.
Conservation efforts intensified

Moreover, to tackle illegal turtle poaching, the state is raising awareness about their ecological role in aquatic systems. Dedicated turtle breeding centres have been set up in Sarnath and Kukrail, and special attention is being given to Ganga-adjacent districts like Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Hapur, Bijnor, Amroha, and Bulandshahr.

With a focus on endangered species, Jatayu Conservation Centre has been established in Gorakhpur to protect vultures. Natural farming practices are also being promoted to support biodiversity and pollinators.
Massive tree plantation along rivers
Reportedly, since 2017–18, over 204.65 crore saplings have been planted across the state. This year, another 35 crore saplings are set to be planted, with a focus on riverbanks and Amrit Sarovars. Under the Ganga Van initiative alone, over 14 crore saplings will be planted along rivers including the Ganga, Yamuna, Chambal, Betwa, Ken, Gomti, Hindon, and Son.
As per the India State of Forest Report 2023, UP’s forest cover has increased by 559.19 sq. km. The government aims to raise the state’s green cover to 20% by 2030. Wetlands are also being protected to sustain local biodiversity.
