Wherever one goes in Delhi, they are faced by a perennial problem- where do I park my vehicle? Often, the solution is to just park it at the side of the road and get on with your work; that is what most Delhiites tend to do.

If you too are used to doing this, it's time to mend your ways because the Delhi government is putting in place strict fines for wrong doers and those who park on the side in the vicinity of a parking lot.

What's changing?

Parking in Delhi is no longer as easy as just leaving your car at the side of the road. Along with the changing policies on illegal parking, your parking habits will have to change too.

The major rule that will be put into action in the coming few months is that vehicle owners will be heavily fined in case they park on the road, within a 500 meter radius of any kind of parking lot. Apart from that, parking on the ground level will itself be rather costly for you. This is to urge people to make use of multilevel parking areas that have cropped up in several parts of Delhi.

Some of the things that the Delhi government will put into place are actually rather interesting. For one, all parking lots are required to have at least one electric charger to recharge electric vehicles. They will also make use of new technologies to help them fine more wrongdoers.

In case you do end up parking illegally, there is a price to be paid. There is a high possibility that vehicles could be towed, fined or even seized. The consequences are dire because the authorities actually want to make a difference.

Why the need?

The main reason behind this revolutionary change is to make way for cyclists and pedestrians, especially in crowded marketplaces. Additionally, it will also ensure that people park their vehicles in the designated place before going to the markets. Though a few markets in Delhi have been pedestrianized, this move takes it a step further.

Knock Knock

This is one move that has been coming for a long time. With the help of this, we can expect wider roads. Wrongly parked vehicles are often the cause for long traffic jams and choke points, and this move should surely help combat that.
