Knocksense: A local content and recommendations platform

The bunker found under Mumbai’s Raj Bhavan, will soon be converted into a 3D museum and will serve as a major tourist attraction. The bunker is set to be modelled into a full fledged museum which will welcome tourists and sightseers later this year.

The remodelled museum, will speak about the rich history of Raj Bhavan and the state.

The museum which was inaugurated by president Ram Nath Kovind on August 18, will also have a virtual reality tour and a 3D recreation.

The Story

In the August of 2016, governor of Maharashtra, C. Vidyasagar Rao, was the first to discover the underground bunker which had remained closed for over 6 decades.

The challenging restoration of the bunker then commenced as it was to be done without compromising the sanctity and security of the governor’s office and the ‘Jal Bhushan’ residence, which lay atop the bunker.

According to reports, when the restoration began, it was found that the bunker had a fort-like structure and was guarded by a 20 ft tall gate. It was also found that the bunker had 13 rooms and sound ventilation and drainage systems.

The rooms had been given names such as Shell Store, Cartridge Store, Shell Lift, Pump, Central Artillery Store, Workshop and several others. These suggested that the structure used to un-arm or fire shells at any enemy, coming in through the water route.

The Future

The century-old bunker is currently being preserved and turned into a virtual reality-assisted museum, which is set to become a major attraction for history buffs and tourists alike. The museum will serve as the testament of Maharashtra’s great martial history and the history of Raj Bhavan itself.

The bunker has been restored as of now and the government plans to open it for the public by the end of the year. Visitors will be able to be a part of Maharashtra’s history, visualize the use of the bunker in the olden days and also have a virtual tour of the place. Who says history has to be boring!
