Public transport in Mumbai is undoubtedly the backbone of the economy and the lifeline of the city. Adding to the already legendary public transport system the Maharashtra government is looking to procure a number of electric buses.
These electric buses may soon be seen running between Mumbai and other nearby cities, especially plying between Mumbai and Pune. With these buses the Maharashtra Road Transport Corporation aims to make travelling by road a more comfortable as well as eco-friendly affair. The transport corporation has decided to procure 100 of these e-buses which have already made a debut in other cities of the country.
According to reports, these buses are expected to start running by the end of the year. All of the 100 buses that Maharashtra Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has floated a tender for, are expected to be air conditioned. The buses will be charged at e-charging stations which will be set-up at major MSRTC depots, reports TOI.
The state government has also planned to set up charging stations along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and other major state highways.
Maharashtra has not been the only state to push for the more eco-friendly and sustainable means of public transport. States such as Delhi, Lucknow and Indore have also dabbled in sustainable transportation; Lucknow has already tested and ran a few of the environment friendly electric buses.
WIth the Mumbai metro not proving to be much of a success, these buses will bring a ton of relief to travellers who wish to travel from Mumbai to other nearby cities.
