Mumbai & other Maha districts aim to register 10% e-vehicles among all new registrations by 2025

The private and public transport infrastructure in the state expects a green revamp.

Marching ahead towards the goal of sustainable development, the Maharashtra Government declared that it expects 10% of all new registration in the state to consist of electric vehicles, by 2025.

As per the draft Electric Vehicles Policy 2021, 10% of all automobiles are anticipated to be electricity powered by 2025 and this will be composed of 10% 2-wheelers, 20% 3-wheelers and 5% 4-wheelers. Consequently, the private and public transport infrastructure in the state expects a green revamp.

15% of Maharashtra's bus fleet to electrified soon!

The draft policy also entails the provision for the establishment of at least one Gigafactory. In a bid to meet the amplified demands, this centre will help in the production of advanced batteries. It is to be noted that the draft policy awaits approval by the central government. Currently, Maharastra occupies a 12% share in national vehicles registrations and this is not significant enough to motivate automobile manufacturers.

The state expects to take benefits from the Centre's projects. While Maharashtra leads the production of internal combustion engines in the country, it also aims to become a top manufacturer of electric vehicles. As of now, the draft EV policy is focused on urban centres like Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Nagpur, Pune, Nashik and Aurangabad. Interventions are being worked out to attain 25% electrification of intra-city transport facilities by 2025. As a part of this, 15% of 18,000 buses under Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation are going to be transformed into electric vehicles.

Highways & expressways to be equipped with EV facilities

Subsequently, the government is also working on amping up the charging stations in the city to cater to the increasing demands. Further, the Transport Commissioner affirmed that highways/expressways shall be equipped with all EV facilities. This includes Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the upcoming Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway and the Mumbai-Nashik and Pune-Nashik highways.

The Chairman of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, Sudhir Srivastava, said that the MPCB is working on its own policy in alignment with the draft EV policy. This shall expound upon rules for recycling lithium-ion batteries and related electronic wastes that would be produced. Further, the government has also announced that all new state vehicles will be electricity-powered from April 2022.
