Aamchi Mumbai is all set to get revamped double-decker buses in 2021, which will save them from being pushed into extinction. Brihanmumbai Electricity and Supply (BEST) has made a decision to upgrade their fleet of buses with 100 new double-deckers with advanced features and safety measures. Earlier in November, BEST had floated tenders for the procurement of these buses.
New double-deckers will be upgraded with new features
These latest double-decker buses will run on automated manual transmission and will be equipped with BS VI compliant engine, in a bid to reduce pollution. The new fleet will be highly advanced with pneumatic door closers, two door entrances and two staircases for fast and smooth movement of passengers but at present, the double decker buses plying on the roads have just one staircase.
Additionally, to ensure the safety of the citizens on board, emergency exit doors will be equipped with CCTV cameras. The new range of double-deckers will have inter-communication devices with a capacity to carry 70 passengers at a time. In 2021, diesel-operated buses are scheduled to be procured for long-distance routes.
An iconic feature of Mumbai since 1937
Although an iconic feature of Mumbai city since 1937, there were plans of scrapping out double-decker buses back in 2018, due to high maintenance issues. But the BEST committee had raised objections and has now assured that the new double-decker buses will be procured as a replacement of the scrapped buses. At present, Mumbai has only 120 double-decker buses in a fleet of over 3,500 buses operating on 7 routes, in the city.
